The other day, I wrote a blog about fleece material, but this time I would like to write mainly about down.

Isn't it the first thing to go up is down, which is representative of the insulation (heat insulation wear)? There are many people who wear streetwear, and many people come to buy in winter. But aren’t there a lot of people who don’t know the features?

・Benefits
It has high heat retention capacity per gram number and light.

Care is a little troublesome

It is often worn during a tent stay or during a break in good weather. Light, warm, and high heat retention, this item is often chosen as a cold wear. Especially when luggage increases in midwinter tent stays, etc., it is lightweight and small down that can be stored is useful. I think you will choose down because there is little exercise in the camp.

However, it is weak to water wet, and once it gets wet, the heat retention capacity is extremely reduced. This is not only caused by rain and snow, but also wet due to your own sweat. Depending on the model, some models use water-repellent processing on the fabric and down itself, but basically it is not worn during action, and it is worn during breaks. Also, when washing at home, care is a little troublesome, such as the need for a special detergent, or it is better to put it out for cleaning.

○What is Phil Power? (hereinafter referred to as FP)
Generally, products with high FPs are considered warm, but this requires some attention.
FP is a numerical value of the bulge of feathers per gram (high height). The higher the value, the higher the air and the higher the heat retention capacity. Therefore, the higher the numerical value, the lower the heat retention capacity and the lower the weight. However, even if the FP is low, if the amount of down increases, it will be warmer even if the weight increases slightly, so it is difficult to judge simply by FP alone.
Generally, more than 650FPs are said to be high quality, and when it comes to down climbing brands, products of more than 650FPs are the main ones.

○Duck down goose down
Duck down and goose down are also available for down. Duckdown is duck feathers and goosedown is goose feathers. Generally, goose-down is said to be higher quality, and it is more expensive. Some brands use ultra-luxury downs called white goose.

○Feather
If you look at the display of downwear, there is a notation of feather, but the feather has a high height and prevents the shape collapse. Heat insulation makes the part of the down, but feather is also an indispensable material.

Here is an explanation of the down. Recently, there has been a mixture of down and synthetic fiber, and there have been some wear that uses a fabric that reflects heat on the lining instead of downwear material to enhance heat retention.
